Heart on My Sleeve

May 17, 2019 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

“Heart On My Sleeve”

I wear my heart on my sleeves
so I guess my shirt implies what I can put up with today
I wear my heart on my sleeves
my biggest decision every morning is which shirt will put my heart on display
I wear my heart on my sleeves
and being this transparent, its hard finding a shirt to match
I wear my heart on my sleeves
so the colors reflect my emotional state, like a mood ring as a matter of fact
I wear my heart on my sleeves
now the next decision is the length of sleeves and will I dress down
I wear my heart on my sleeves
long sleeves are lively and have more room for love and let downs
I wear my heart on my sleeves
mid sleeves are anxious and bear the angst from recent frustrations
I wear my heart on my sleeves
short sleeves leave no room for heart ache and agitation
I wear my heart on my sleeves
and if I have no shirt….well at least you know
I wear my heart on my sleeves
so if you see no sleeves, Just.Leave.Me.Alone
To me, style has always been about bringing attention to how I feel
Needless to say, but my look says it all-I’m.In.Khakis! Where’s the appeal?!
but I’ll say it out loud if I have to, so there’s no room left for doubt
I wear my heart out, my outfit wears me thin, and so My Heart Is Worn Out
So I wear my heart on my sleeves,
like there’s anywhere else to put it..

“behind my eyelids”

I hate the movies that reel,
behind my eyelids
they always depict how I feel,
behind my eyelids
they always play what I conceal,
behind my eyelids
pain journeys beyond my shield,
behind my eyelids
hidden scars tear at my veil,
behind my eyelids
issues become too many to deal,
behind my eyelids
so many things I wish I could kill,
behind my eyelids
life seems too real,
behind my eyelids
my breath gets caught as my layers unpeel,
behind my eyelids
because the things I see gives me the chills,
behind my eyelids
honestly I’m too far from healed,
behind my eyelids
and I can’t take the truth revealed,
behind my eyelids
I rather you see the color in my eyes,
then the story they tell-
but if you look too deeply, you’ll see dark secrets,
so my sunglasses keep people and light repelled-
because I’m ok with you knowing me,
just not with you knowing me well-
even I’m shaken by the facts of myself,
and fear that you’ll see what I see, a living hell-
—
“truth”

does my truth unearth your lies?
does my truth highlight what you hide?
does my truth cut your pride?
does my truth blacken your eyes?
does my truth embolden your truth?
does my truth help you face ‘you’?
does my truth help you stay true?
or does my truth pain you?
does my truth paint you?
what color?
does my truth shade you?
how dark?
does my truth pave you?
how smooth?
does my truth fade you?
how clear?
does my truth phase you?
how long?
does my truth frame you?
what pose?
does my truth shame you?
how so?
does my truth name you?
what? why? how? when? where?
does it matter the context of truth?
does it matter when truth is given?
is truth a freedom, or a prison?
is truth forbidden, or forgiven?
is truth blind, if not, then with what color eyes?
you see where I am, you see more of my truth.
but how many see you?
do you see you?
then what do you see?
is that the truth? really?
if not, then worry less of mine
until you find yours and can face it freely
knowing others see it
yet you embrace it proud as skin
because truth is beautiful

“hatelovedislikeyou”

I hate you, why shouldn’t I?
why shouldn’t you, hate me too?
why shouldn’t we, hate eachother?
love is just as strong a word as hate
why can’t we admit that love is Nothing… without hate!
so I hate you!
and I hate me!
and you hate me!
and you hate you!
and we hate us!
and we hate them!
and they hate us!
but there’s no hate… if there’s no love?
so we just love, love, love, and love so strong
even though when we love, love, love, we love wrong
but so what?!
because if we don’t fight
then love, is just ‘like’
and what is love like, if love is really like?
well if love is like, then there’s no hate
because like, is too weak to hate
so dislike replaces hate
and I feel that’s more true than saying, I hate you!
because hate and love aren’t real
we use them too much, how can it be special?
but like and dislike, is real
hate is just a strong emotion, it lies, its impulsive-like us
and it’s is never taken serious
and we’re never taken serious
and you never take me serious
and I never take you serious, let you tell it..
but dislike is feeling-it takes thought, and somehow is less casual-unlike us
so its respected more
and you don’t respect me enough
and I don’t respect you enough, let you tell it..
love isn’t taken serious anymore
love, you don’t take me serious anymore
love, I don’t take you serious anymore, let you tell it..
we aren’t hateful
but I don’t know why we say hate for
hate what? hate why? I hate your ” “!
love is exploitive
hate is expletive
love and hate is abuse, where we exploit expletives
like is efficient
dislike is business
like and dislike are careers
and we aren’t successful
we’re still young, but damn, act your age!
“shut up, I hate you!”
..see what I mean?
“you’re right, I don’t like this anymore”
that’s strange, I believe you
“I’m sorry, I’m leaving”
no wait, comeback, I love you!
“don’t say shit you dont mean, you just like the idea, should’ve told me you liked me, I’d have stayed I think…goodbye”
go then! I’m good without you! I hate you!
“no I hate you! that’s why I’m leaving!”
I don’t care, I hate you!
I love you too
“I know you do”
let’s start over
“with what? like?”
yea, I like that idea, do you?
“yea, I dislike the thought of losing you”
I believe you
“I’ll never lie..on purpose”
than never say hate
“only if you never say love”
I love you 😛
😉 “I love you too, can’t help can we?”
its just a word
“until you believe it”
do you believe me?
“I try to”
well what shoyukd we say next?
“fuck it, on three together…”
one. “one”
two. “two”
three. “three”
“I HATE YOU!”I LOVE YOU!
hatelovedislikeyou
“huh?”
hate loved, is like you
“like us”
I love you

They Say

May 7, 2019 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

“they say”

they say love is a bank
but the things we deposit
just isn’t worth saving

what are we saving?
cuz we both withdraw
and still end up broken

they say love’s a vacation
I get it we trip
most days we just lay in

and we never work at it
we drink and reek havoc
then pass out in the midst of each others madness

they say love is
because, love IS
and the moment you say what love isn’t
then no longer does love live
—
“so low/solo”

I’m so low
I’m solo
I keep my business on the low low
but I wear my heart like a logo
in my feels, feeling like I’m going loco
I been feeling so low
I been living so low
I feel like I need soul-grow
because my soul isn’t solar, it’s so/so-
so dark,
I need the light
but I run from it
its too bright
for me to learn from it
I’ll go blind and burn in it
so all I ever do is turn from it..
now that light
is at my back
but it doesn’t light
up the track
honestly,
I don’t like where I’m at
like,
what’s the point of life,
if all I ever do is lack?
go ‘head,
you can laugh!
heard it all,
wont be the last!
doubt if God,
wants me to last
I walk forward,
but I see the past
too close!
when I read the glass
…noises in my head
but fuck you sanity!
I’ll never need you back!
I’m so low
I’m solo
—
“untitled”

what’s a promise?!
just a word.
hollow air.
like your love!
cold nights
you strayed and left me, I went right
3 a.m. we awake to no lights
eclipse, from a solstice
loving you is rolling dice
never knowing what I’ll get
haunted by your poltergeist
never needed to see you to see the wreck you’ve left
I’m in the blind
but love is,
“and so is love,” they say,
though your snowed in cold shoulders shrug
tears begin to avalanche, but I choke them up
you aren’t worth them
you aren’t worth it
you aren’t worthy
your lack of worth only made it worse
only made me worse
only made me work
more lonely, thinking if only I could escape the hurt
then I could replace the burr
of the blistering wind, whistling mistakes I’ve never faced that blurred
the truest face of her
but its time I crack open reality
tilt up my fears
and swallow my pride
to kill those butterflies you once gave me
hopefully i’ll throw them up
just to get you out of my system
I’ve been through enough

I saw my Dad for the first time

May 7, 2019 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

I saw my dad for the first time
I wonder if who I am now, would’ve made you proud?
I saw my dad for the first time
I wonder how my life would’ve been different, if you were around?
I saw my dad for the first time
I wonder if you would’ve seen yourself, inside of my smile?
I saw my dad for the first time
I wonder what words you’d have told me, when ever I was down?
I saw my dad for the first time
I wonder what it would’ve been like, seeing you cheer me on in the stands?
I saw my dad for the first time
I wonder what you would’ve taught me most, about being a man?
I saw my dad for the first time
and I just noticed, that you never held me in your hands?
I saw my dad for the first time
but he’s never seen me, I just got a picture of him, he’s been dead 30 years, I’m 30…damn, we never had a chance!
…
and I hate him for it, you hear me?! I hate you dad!
I really don’t, I’m just really mad
thinking of the moments and possibilities, We Never had
and that I grew up NEVER uttering the word Dad
why did you mess up?!
I want to blame you as if you’re the reason why I’m so messed up?!
my mom had to deal and live through that guilt, wilting becoming lesser
after 30 years I met my brother, but not your family maybe that’s for the better
because I’m probably so much like you, that all I’ll ever do is cause them pain
maybe the memory, maybe the visual, maybe my personality, or maybe the fact my grieving mother gave me your name!
my whole life has been a blanket of shame!
what if that night never happened?!
what if I didn’t grow up repressing shit, depressed and lost in a rage like you
afflicted by violence liquor and the beer taste like you
demons I battled, with too many shadows I had to chase like you
I never knew you, but I ended up putting my hands on a woman’s face like you!..
I’ve failed so far as a father being distant and unavailable just like you!
speaking of being a father, I never had an example!
you lost it after life got outside of what you had planned and could handle
where you at dad?!
is heaven even real?!
would you even go considering the reason you were killed?
I just got close to God, and I don’t even have a clue
I don’t know if I should be looking up or looking down when I’m thinking of you
but I smiled so big when I saw your picture, you was a handsome dude
it made me proud to know that, still chasing vanity even in a somber mood
I think I really love you, though I don’t know how
I guess that gives me hope for gaining forgiveness and love from both my sons one day when I’m out
I look at you everyday..but you never talk back
you have shades on your face like I always do, in many ways we match
I heard my voice is soft like yours, ironically chasing things that I’ll never see and believing them as facts
but that’s the makings of faith
I try to make sense of myself when I’m facing your face
I get lost in your picture and somehow I believe that I know you
I guess you have a look that I’ve searched for my whole life that’s just so easy to go to
I bet you would’ve understood me huh? I’m 50 shades of your ingredients
spent so long searching for meanings and reasons that years became seasonless
but I finally saw you for the first time…and I can see you forever now
it’s easier this way anyway, because a picture can never let you down…

Codependency

April 30, 2019 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

I wrote this poem and read it to a few people, it captivated them, I read it to another person that also is a poet, though I don’t consider myself a poet but he asked if I had a title, and I said no, not really, its kind of a performance poem…and he said this should be named codependency. Because that’s what he hears and he spoke on the importance of women, especially young women seeing this because the very real nature of toxic love becoming a codependency doing more harm than good. He asks his daughter, do you love him or are you just used to him? It’s a thin line between love and hate, but love is on one side, is something he also said. I wrote this knowing the truth it had been in most of my relationships, a cycle I loved but needed to fall out of love with. I used to think crazy love meant you loved more, but that’s not true..so I hope you can really read this and get something out of it because for me, relationships were always my trigger, either needing them closer or needing that closure. Emotions blur lines, what you may believe you are seeing clearly, you aren’t, that’s your fear of loneliness more often than not. Be brave, step back, and re-evaluate, because the loss of love may hurt you, but love doesn’t hurt

“Codependency”
I love love
I love you, love
but love, your love is killing me!
slowly..
you killin Me!
you killin me Slow!
you killin me Slow!…ly
sounds of glass chandeliers
marble vases
life sized mirrors
ceiling to floor windows
all combusting and shattering at once
added with the desperate sound of nails torturously dragging across the chalk board agonizingly slow to the point of insanity
mixed with the shrill screams of your voice in my head telling me that I’m worthless, you hate me, you regret us, but you..love.. me?
ahhhh, fuck! I love too!
trapped inside of this house of hoarded noises and horrors
as if we are inside the box of Pandora!
pandemonium is a regiment
panoramic malevolence
panorama of medicine
pan the cameras to catch the very moment you wouldn’t let me in
pointless pictures, a million hollow smiles reflected within our rusted frames
you know I tried but I’m teetering a cliff and you driving me crazy! i’ll swerve forreal! what?! you think that I wont?!
no
yes
stop
go
please
no thanks
forget it
forget you
remember I love you
I hate you
take me back
take that off
take it back
take this
take that
all you do is take!
take a hike!
what will it take?
take your time..
well take off then!
take 3!
let’s try this again..
look, I’ve messed up, ok I’m messed up
a torrent of text messages meshed with a plethora of ignored calls
then our verbal brawls
your words are scars
which reflect my flaws
I built up walls
you break them down, then break me down, back up!
rifle directed at you
ruger directed at me
I’m speaking metaphorically, love, we’re killing each other
or maybe you’re just killing me
did I fall in love or in obligation
fearing how you’d handle my departure and having to cope with the aches of loneliness more than the brevity of patience
until you’ve known love you don’t have any idea what pain is
lost looking for the right one, but what if they do not exist
at least I have you hear, and you have me, it’s not settling
every land is occupied by settlers, its how we build a home and a family
you remind me of so many things that I can never let go of
we’re one in the same
feigning fangs of ferocity and fear
its a thin line between love and life
symbolized within three fine thin strikes
across my wrist
tattoos of my affection passion and strength
and I dedicated it to you, you like it?
I couldn’t afford you roses or your name
but all roses wilt and tattoos get lazored off but this, THIS will forever remain
what a coincidence, we’re like twins, yours looks the same!
toast, to your love, whether potion or poison
tears enhance the taste of champagne
blood blends better in red wine
yea, we’re so crazily refined
love, we been through enough and came too far to give up
laughing remembering those times we should’ve and tried to, but never gave up
but what a beautiful massacre life and love is
inhaling your toxins, sipping your venom and swallowing the poisonous bliss of each other
I’m numb to it, calloused by the jagged edges of mutilation
finding relief in the moments you slow things down and
kill me slow, because I rather you do it then me…
what can I say, life is dark, love is light and I rather die illuminated
I love love, and you love it too
but do you love me…too?
because I.
still.
love.
you…

“I feel the storm”
I hear the storm
do u hear the storm
I feel the storm
I feel we’ve been warned
I feel like I’m cold,
and then I feel warm
I keep trying to change,
because I feel worn
I feel like I’m swarmed
but this is my norm
I try to do good, to deflect your harm
reach out with your arm
but the distance is more than your arm
sometimes we’re both off, and then we’re both on
and then I go off, and you just go on
then one of us yawns…
we been at this since dawn
why drag this on?
then you wave your arm,
like a magic wand
like I will be gone
and if I turn away…
then you play that song
that had us both drawn
I’m flattered but mad at your attitude
you take the avenue
I take the alley, but we both turn around like we inside a cul-de-sac
and meet on the street where this started at
I raise my starter cap
then you hook your hair
behind your ear
we put our cars out of gear
the headlights shine bright thru our windshield
we both looking forward
like we both want this
so we open our doors
and we walk thru the rain
we’re soaked in our pain
but live for this moment when we stand in both lanes
and kiss away all our shame
and all of those names
and all of the thangs
that had us both drained
because we’re both vane
although it won’t last…
so when we let go
its a thing of the past
and its on a string
that we won’t cut off
because love, isn’t something that we can just shrug off
we both feel the storm
but if we stay stuck together, then we can keep warm

Color blind

April 15, 2019 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

Tread lightly..tiptoe…be careful…PC…Who cares if I offend anyone! “I’m color blind” I hear a lot, ha! Culturally this country is so tone deaf because for the longest time people weren’t made to care! Now we have all these incidents and social missteps because people aren’t used to thinking beyond themselves! Let’s talk prison for a sec. Prison is a system of hope dealing and hope killing while saying, get better or else, in the process. I have a cousin in here that me and our friend began to argue with because he was denied a chance to have his parole hearing moved up, yet people in his same program was granted that opportunity. I told him to write them again, and basically he said that he’s good, he’s not going to set himself up for that. That he knows himself and he’s not going to set himself up to get letdown again because he will take steps back in his mentality. So instead of getting ready to go home, to his lady and his kids, he’s staying in here for several more months longer than he should. I told him he doesn’t care about his freedom, and we argued, he couldn’t see our point, but then I noticed how tied in his emotions were to this rejection, that he was saying in every way but direct, that he isn’t strong enough to take more rejection, and he’s been through a lot. Now, there was no good reason given to why they didn’t hold up their end of the bargain once his programming is finished, except a check list of what not to do until they see him. This system kills hope. What is a human being without hope, that only knows rejection while being told to be docile and compliant. It’s not realized how this unexplained set backs and refusals to advance people is a hindrance to people and their family emotionally, and having hopes let down is so draining and it has the ability to make a person revert back to a sense of not caring, and then what…? People act as if there has always been help for incarcerated people. Most of these people have never been further than the prison they reside in. I don’t care how many white people you believe there is in prison, it’s NOT the same. When black people are arrested and booked, it’s an energy that almost says, I got you, you’re exactly where you belong. Also how we are treated comparatively, is like, “you’ll come back”. I don’t know why you care, as if we have nothing to come back to and no one that loves us. Even the outside treatment facilities were too far away from urban communities that black people would violate parole by not being able to make it to their treatment recommendations and parole meetings, and so it continued the steady influx and flow of us back into prison. And then these programs became largely in-patient to supposedly fix that problem, but underlying truth again was that it kept a certain segment of the population inside of prison LONGER, like my cousin…like ME. No one would build a church outside of the community that it’s supposed to cater to, how can it be affected and how would it have a congregation, it’d be a waste of money. For so long, outside organizations and programs weren’t plenty because no one wanted those organizations within urban communities, and if they were, they were largely black and lowly funded and barely recognized. So why build more, when the people that you are supposedly trying to help can’t make it to you. SO now all these organizations and such are helping with transportation, and it looks like this has been a thing always there, just not used. No, the states use their resources to continue building more prisons to address a problem, instead of building treatment to heal the disconnect and systemic problem. Even the crimes that are punished the worst are largely committed by black people. For the life of me, I don’t know how you tell a victim of sexual assault and molestation, that it isn’t a violent crime. So in my state, Nebraska, these crimes are largely helped with new legislation and ways to move in and out of the system quicker, while sentenced at a lower rate versus other I guess real violent crimes like assault, gun possession, robbery, domestic etc. We just had a senator on the floor that refused to vote for a bill involving the snap program because she says that she thinks drug dealers are worse than rapists! A woman said this! There are so many underlying tones that people don’t bother looking at for what they truly are, most black men aren’t convicted sex offenders or rapists, but they are for a large part, convicted drug dealers and violent offenders. SO simply, less help for the black community when it comes to government funding and assistance, so now, with no home or no food…and barely knowing of anything outside of the poverty you lay in day in and day out, and you have to survive, after all self preservation is a human trait, what would you do?! This system will take their foot off a black man’s neck for a moment only to shift and place it on his back. And who cares right? I mean who really gives a damn, it’s not you, we did it to ourselves right? We have the same advantages and opportunities as you do. Forget the fact that all these clinical churches I’ll call them, are built outside of the communities they need to serve, so one side of the population is getting their needs met and the resources offered, while another side can’t find a ride, let alone know their way around those parts of town. Yea, I get it, staying in prison sometimes just feels so much easier, even when you are dying inside and want to get out with everything in you, but after so much shit you’ve climbed through uphill, you just can’t take the slippery and shitty step of possible rejection, because who knows the person you may become once you fall all over again with more than you can handle and everyone can smell it, you can’t hide it…so you start feeling just how the world feels when they here of people like you…so the fuck what, I don’t have life, I’ll get out eventually. Being color blind is impossible, lie to yourself

Let me ask a question

March 15, 2019 by Russell Wardlow 1 Comment

Let me ask a question, why do so many things in this country go unquestioned with our supposed freedoms of speech? How do so many things go unchallenged and remain lop-sided within a system supposedly governed and legislated by checks and balances? We have so many “movements” that do the trick of keeping us excited and attentive within the moment, but grasping no understanding of what laid before and what’s to come beyond that moment. As if those questions or thoughts are too inconveniencing to get more involved in, so in a sense, we rather run around ignorant with as little information and as much outrage or empathy as possible. No wonder what we seek doesn’t last, because we have no staying power in our own convictions, especially if it doesn’t directly or immediately affect us.

We have so many organizations working to advocate for the human condition and other disadvantages, but they barely gain traction or get enough recognition because they don’t come together and acknowledge each other, offering resources. They stay with ideological differences that serve more to prolong their wanted impact, as if it’ll only get done under their umbrella their way. There is more talk of unity than there is collective work for inclusivity in all forms of it. I mean inclusivity of culture, color, and creed, believing that you share a common goal and outcome. A government works together to work, so shouldn’t humanitarian organizations? I read this quote that I’ll butcher in this book called “The Theory Of Everything”, that said if we merely stay at the stage of celebrating diversity, then all we’ll continue to do is passively endorse a culture of separation.” This went on to mean that tribalism, racism, xenophobia, classism etc are more enforced when we speak so much more of our differences than speaking of and searching for our similarities.

We do that by accepting one another, by being inclusive, by diving in for more than a dip, but a swim…back stroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and all that stuff. I can’t swim, but I rather drown in our similarities and inclusivity than in the shallowness of differences. I hate always having to speak of how my life was much different or tougher than yours and how we differ, I’ve been this black sheep, black swan, black man and whatever other black mythological creature than person. I rather you remember that I am just like you, a person, because then if maybe you begin to see me as you, maybe you’ll care more. Even if unconsciously, I’ll take that, we don’t all have to be woke, being woke takes real empathy, that isn’t easy. You know I saw on TV that what was trending was videos of throwing cheese at your baby’s face. It seemed cute and funny, but I feel like that baby at times. This little unknowing social experiment, powerless, but still someone’s entertainment, unable to do anything but be observed, directed, judged, and laughed at yet made to believe that those around me care and want the best for me. Being a baby is a prison of its own, there’s no independence, with a lot of shock, confusion, and fear almost at every moment with seconds of joy that you’d go mad if you didn’t experience it.

Which has more value, a person or a prison??? Privilege or punishment??? Pain is the most remembered and forgotten part of life. We remember ours so quickly, regardless of what joy comes before or after it, yet just as quickly forget the possibilities of someone else’s pain. So how can we start creating a real wave of change, instead of just responding for pop culture or outrage as our compass? Easy, ask. Just ask. To ask, is to care, to care is to get involved. Getting involved at any level is better than commenting as if it doesn’t involve us, yet it involves us enough to involve our opinion. If we can speak about something, than we should be about something even more. Law of the jungle, don’t tell me, show me, anyone can roar, but in here, I’ve heard every type of roar from inside and out, claiming so much while doing so little. That type of work gets no play in prison in terms of respect, just like it doesn’t in terms of politics, and yet, people are re-elected! Maybe that’s what it is, we vote for what actions resemble our own…damn.

After we ask, and then get involved, the last thing to do is to include others. It takes a village. Yea, there’s a lot of issues going on right now, but if we keep addressing the symptoms and not the root, then, well shit you know, that’s nursing 101. Don’t just accept things and turn a blind eye. Ask a question. Get involved. Include others aka BYOF-bring your own friend, then energy is created, energy creates a wave, a wave becomes a movement and a movement becomes a party, and then we get drunk off change! What we believe matters a lot when we decide to get involved, we can have fun doing hard things, it’s not all doom and gloom, relationships are formed, other aspects of life and ourselves get discovered, because there’s always Good in the Bad! We have to live like life isn’t just aimless practice everyday with no purpose to it, no, the thing about life is, that everyday we get to practice our purpose, the difference is if you practice on purpose versus without purpose. We find true value and purpose by doing for others, not ourselves. There’s a lot of hidden gems in prison, just like you yourself hold hidden gems within you, there’s no difference besides the fact of us being in prison. Struggles highlight the greatness to come if we embrace it, pressure emboldens the diamond at our core to shine outwardly so everyone else can see. But sometimes these pressures get the best of us, the only thing that can ail that is people getting involved. Care reflects and projects value…Prison is just full of people that lost or forget their value, so I’m asking for help in getting that value re-established. Help me, so I can help others, or help others so they can help me…it takes a village and an idea, not an ideology…Just ask
