I Know How She Feels, I Promise

November 27, 2019 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

I know how she feels, I promise

I know what she means

about being set free

she wants to leave on her terms

but now I’m the tree

that’s bearing her leaves

but I take the breeze

and though it may freeze

I am at peace

because there’s more to me

and she’s just ‘A’ piece

I cut off my sleeve

my cuff isn’t linked

so I too, can leave on my terms

don’t feel guilty

we all aren’t innocent..

I know how she feel, I promise

cuz I felt alone

when I pick up the phone

and I’m dialing her number, but it feel too long

and I try to do right, but I keep doing wrong

and I listen to songs

that may tell me the truth

becuz I can not be that honest

no, I just can’t be that honest

I can not give her that power

I am a man, so I’m faulty

and that’s no excuse

but I am not use

to not feeling used

and I know she gets used

and I know she too use

to that kinda abuse

though I try to get thru.

Its exhausting

then she tries to get thru, but we’re exhausted

just tell her, I know how she feel, and let’s be honest…bye

What’s a Tree With No Branch

November 25, 2019 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

What’s a tree wit no branch?

just reach out

don’t bleed out

let it ink out

I rather u write ur wrongs with me

than write me off swiftly

p.s. I can’t let u go

fucking glue…

Do u love me too?

Or is this too much for you?

Sometimes I struggle

but I love feeling stuck with u.

We can hum the blues or run the rules-

off the road and be ride or die

but without the die

air without u is cyanide

a painful death I would willingly die one thousand times inside y

our eyes spark like dynamite

a tree may sprout out more branches if it keeps in tact with its roots

I don’t know if that’s possible, but we have nothing but time to find our truths.

Lock the Gate

November 24, 2019 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

Lock the gate

I lock my door

my door opens

but I’m still closed in

cuz I don’t have the keys that matter, what does it matter

story of my life and your heart

maybe u will, maybe u won’t open your heart

that doubt that clouds ur mind is still closed-in

your hang ups hanging up like a clothes pin

how can distance not hurt more than our closeness

fear is not the same thing as an omen

thoughts become reality when you act them out

painting reality as coincidences you try to ration out

I told u so’s-becoming rationales

but you did this to us, to u, to me, regardless however it fractions out

we’re fractured now

forget you mirror, the truth is clearer, when I’m backing out

starring at the broken fragments, of fragile glass, reflecting off my glasses-we’re matching now

but what happens now

you’re brokeness never freed me, I’m still trapped

tried to fix the pieces but how long will that last

I open my door to only stare at more locks

as time pasts, im not aware of the clocks

tick tock

a locked door behind a locked gate

a trapped soul inside a broken mirror

a wounded man still doomed to pride

a runaway love with no room to hide

a lost mind tryna find peace a lost time that reminds me

I’m not fine but don’t mind me

cuz its about time that I find me

maybe time, is the right key.

Prison Reflects Society

November 23, 2019 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

YOU KNOW I RIDE WITH MY BLACK PEOPLE!

Until them ironic times I gotta ride on my black people.

I PICK THE SIDE OF MY BLACK PEOPLE!

until them ironic times I’m picking sides with my black people –

While on a different side with ‘my’ black people/

That’s on a different side from ‘those’ black people.

Too many condition and contradictions with confections of self hate that expose black people.

Prison a race camp, and nobody understands that MORE THAN BLACK PEOPLE.

What changed?

What’s free?

When I stare segregation in the face,

accepting discrimination every day,

with no denials to it being about race,

there’s no such thing as color blind, picking a color is the only way.

Truth sees between the lines

peer thru your batted lashes.

You’ll see the world in pieces.

Color Coded Conditions.

Nonexistent.

November 20, 2019 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

Life-

Came onto me

and said

do you want to live?

I said

No

Death-

Ran into me

and asked

do you want to die?

I said,

no.

I’m stuck in this in between.

Indecisive I guess.

I live in denial

and die to rejection.

I’m inside of confusion

alluding to this illusion

created disillusions

What I see, isn’t real

What I feel, I can’t see

What I say, I don’t mean

What I mean, is a lie.

A lie more realer than I

balancing the thinnest of lines

of how to live when we die

I hate picking sides.

It’s just a matter of eyes

having yet to open mine

to the day and it’s night

to the dark and it’s light

still stuck inside of a mine

my mind

don’t mind me?

Pay me no mind

I don’t exist.

Don’t give me your Sympathy

May 17, 2019 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

“don’t give me your sympathy”
I’ve never been one for sympathy
please, don’t give me your sympathy
shit, I barely hold together pieces of my fractured memory
meanwhile grasping for any semblance of an identity
at peace with me and emptiness manifesting so much symmetry
darkness lives deep with infamy
even now and back since infancy
hope vaguely scratched the surface like emery
love came and went with incandescent yet inconsistent energy
I’ve been chasing happiness that only fulfills me instantly
but its opposing force latched onto my soul like an entity
now loved ones turned to enemies
paranoia of possible enmity eerily nearing my vicinity
God give serenity!
insecurities veers me from your trinity
but at least I pray with sincerity
it’s just that this life came with a room full of consequential amenities
and all I’ve gotten for it is bear essential proclivities
with my conflicting affinities
spewing a slew of obscenities
because every bond came with a share of penalties
I never understood life period, until I got run-on sentences at my sentencing
I smiled at that rejection, I’ve grown accustomed to our synergy
a vacation away from expectations, that only ever hindered me
believing I needed to live up physically, jaded me mentally
and I found respite chasing my opposites, convinced it meant chemistry
because that’s where attraction lies right?
searching for life ironically resulted in me feeling like I’ve died twice
I can barely walk in my own shoes, that’s why I keep them tied tight
but objects in the mirror appear closer than they are, though in hindsight
it’s been years since I’ve been able to relax my eyesight
because enemies or my wretched past creep up from my blind side
reminiscing those moments I told the mirror that you may die tonight
by my own hands, or in the midst of a riot, or fight, in the line of fire, after past failures from trying the hype of my might
I’m a great thinker, but I never failed with these hands
forgetting its the fingers that build, but the mind that makes the plans
believing my body of work, and the body’s I hurt, is what made the man
then inside me had burst, so my mind put in work, which gave me a chance
to pick back up, and piece together those fractured bits of memory-
that I repressed from my surface and brought with me inside this penitentiary
building on those broken ‘periods’ in life that sentenced me, to this run-on sentencing
now through righting my wrongs, I heal while writing my poems, which led me to the rites I find scribed as my identity
naw, I never been one to ask for sympathy
but after living through all that I have, I count it a blessing being able to develop empathy
I have a savior I savor, so save your sinister sympathy
use it for someone worse off, I’m better now, and I rather take back power of, how you remember me
—

“no excuses”
I was abused, I became an abuser…no excuses
I was confused, and became a confusion…no excuses
I believed my delusions, and became an illusion…no excuses
I wasn’t included, and felt love was intrusive…no excuses
I couldn’t remain lucid, I felt I would lose it…no excuses
my pride cup half full, I remained drunkenly foolish…no excuses
I…fuck it, you get it right? No excuses!
—

“disciple”
I clinged to a, gang for survival
til I, became my survival
I was a, gangsta disciple
now my, gangsta’s discipled
by the, change I decided
I became the, change I provided
I got, game from the Bible
turned the, page in the Bible
provided a, way for revival
spiked a, wave in my vitals
spite was, a way for denial
I was, estranged to the Bible
but there’s no, chains in the Bible
though I’m, a gangsta disciple
Jesus, came with disciples
I speak to, pain and our trials
because every, gangsta’s a child
living through, anger and clouds
so I’m more than a, gangsta disciple
but I have to, disciple the gangstas
because they aren’t, rivals or strangers
they’re just, looking for angels
so I, disciple the dangerous
and dedicate my, life to the shameful
and to the, blamed and disabled
not just offering a, cane to the able
but also a, way for the strangled
