I’m Weak

December 3, 2019 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

I don’t like to admit that I’m weak

but we already inside these seven days

and it only took-

one to fall

You wonderful

as if I’m standing in awe

viewing a water fall

and I’m under all

Your ambiance

You got an audience

like inaugural

when u audio, I mean when u speak, u say what u mean,

You never audibled

marathon intent, coats your strength, u stay wit it like cardio

and when that water broke, them rivers rushed and those ocean tides, turned to waves

u faced it wit me, and never turned away

u soothe my spirit and quiet my voices like my favorite song

so I can admit that I’m weak when its you that makes me strong.

No Words

December 2, 2019 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

The judge dropped the gavel

his throat full of gravel

but time froze

he felt hollow

he looked at his dad

he shook his head solemnly

couldn’t look at his mom

he knew it would break him seeing her cry

so his head held high

though his knees weakened

his mouth clenched

unable to speak

his face telling a lie

body beginning to shutter

hearing the words of his defeated mother

being her only son

she cried out that she loved him

but he could’t say it

gripped by her words

he tried to say it

he just couldn’t say that he loved her back

but only diction it inside his mind

seeing the imagery of those words

murky and running like his mother’s eyelner

but he thought he could muster a ‘bye’

but he stuttered

then stumbled

beyond the threshold of the door

and as the door shut

he finally broke down…

he was just sentenced to life

and he cried in his shackles like a baby

babies can’t talk, but their cries can still be. understood

and that day, that man became a baby and his cries told more than words ever could.

This Can Not Be

December 1, 2019 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

This can’t be true

this can’t be you

this is Not the woman you said you were;

I get so confused

when I look at you

you told me that you were something new

I trusted my gut, but my heart got abused;

and here we go again

when will it ever end?

that I fall for someone that should have stayed a friend;

you weren’t what you seemed

a nightmarish dream!

we fell asleep in peace but awoken by your screams

and in that moment, you cried the truth

no!..

this.can’t.be…

Off the wagon again

I took a shot of pride, and cracked it over the head of a shadow, then yelled, ‘why are you so shallow?!’

I admit I have insecurities

I’m still kinda fragile

but when it comes to my past I’m fast to act as if I’m ready for battle

til I see the shattered glass and realize it reflects me! broken and hollow

my mouth open, I swallow

gulps of dry air down a strep throat past swollen tonsils

my trachea aching, I need a chaser, there’s no mistaking I’m allergic to swallowing pride

running from truth, while following lies

fancy myself a leader yet following lines

that lead me straight to troubled abdominal signs-

bad ‘gut feelings’…

and that moment I wretch

is the moment you sketched

a visual of my regrets

same moment I’m stretched and sprawled over my mess

bile clinging to my flesh

what?! I’m anyone’s guess

this is how I deal with my stress

I’m a paradox, ok? simply-complex

death is a promise…but life is the threat

and my misery experienced inbetween is the cost from the price that was set so forget it!

I rather tilt up, when I feel down

hearing that colored river traversing my esophagus is an irresistible sound

draining into my spirit, the feeling is almost prophetic

how can I regret a cadence that is so poetic

I salute and surrender to your potent potion and poignant nature

you aren’t addiction

you’re needed, you’re necessary, you’re priceless, You Are Art

paint inside my soul with your brown silky silhouette,

slithering the silo of my mouth so seductively

I savor the way you satiate my gullet as if a serum soldiered serendipitously by saliva,

your solution snaking about so serenely,

until I’ve ingested your sacchrine of Serenity and Beyond!

solemn silence summoned,

then subsides to siphoned incessant swishes of kinetic formula until sanity,

sour sanity, is saturated by a solvent solace,

swathing my insides s

wallowing your depths is both a sacred and sinister covenant that whispers to me like a Siren!

Shut up conscience!

don’t sully my savior!

shamelessy soaked in a sin-sated by sensation

spurned and spun by a smooth and sweet sage

don’t be shy she says

sanctimony

I’m safe now

don’t save her

spare myself that emptiness

tilt her up and fill myself, until I dont feel myself

be strong and dont struggle

submit succubus, yes

but her salacious soliloquies, sound so alluring,

luring me ever so close…

I cant resist you!

I grab you!

I have you!

Victory!

You’re All Miiine!

and with pride I consume you in one gulp!

…

then you’re all gone?!

and I’m still broken!

so I break you!

then break down!

seeing your seeping, shattered shadow, I scream, “Why Are You So Shallow?!

I don’t get it..

I drank every last bit of you!

and I’m still.. hollow

RAP: Reality and Adverse Poetry

November 29, 2019 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

I always kinda been sketchy about being called a rapper or what I do is rap, because truthfully I’ve always been able to rap, but I found my voice, my sound, my passion, my healing, and my calling in writing poetry, or rapping in a poetic style. Its really the connotations that is carried with rap that I feel would distract from my overall difference and message when I say what it is that I do, so I decided to make acronyms of rap, rapper, and poet…because what you can’t visualize can’t be named, so I created my own definitions that spoke to the heart of what I do. Now I’m still in love with rap and the art form because its my culture and helped me find me in a confusing world, but because I’m such a fan of it, I wouldn’t destroy it by saying its what I am or do

RAP stands for Reality and Adverse Poetry, being a rapper means

Reality-Adversity Poet Platforming Equality and Resilience

and in so being a Poet, the letters in that which I speak to represent Pain Oppression Empathy and Transformation

The point is for every word to be heard and felt, I deliver a message to connect with people, its all about connecting with me, wanting to be understood and letting people know I understand them

I was asked a few questions like, what do I want people that are listening to know about me and my fellow convicts? Well simply, I am you, and they are me, so we are just like you, caught in and known by our worst moments don’t make us any less a person or less capable of thriving once given another chance

if everyone’s closet of skeletons were opened, I wonder..would we all become even impossibly more distant and rural or would everyone just finally let a big exhale out, relieved, seeing with clarity for the first time that you aren’t the only one because we all wear masks- our real selves and our representatives we carry with us a girl once told me

so my life has become an exhibit of sorts-a museum of Real life without cropped images, refined edges and paint brushes

everyday is a struggle in Every way, because we don’t have the privileged of creating space from the people and things we don’t like while being talked at instead of talked to we don’t enjoy the luxury of personal space, I say in prison we can leave a sociologist or sociopath, or maybe you can flirt with both, being a sociopathic sociologist because we encounter everything and every type behind these walls, reality tv-like experience, priceless I used to dream of wealth growing up as a state ward through out every living and non living arrangement, but now I dream of acceptance and hope and to believe that I can realize the dreams I have of impacting lives for the better off the sweat of my worst, I dream to be able to be true to myself and be my true self everyday unashamed

speaking of shame, I carry a shame that I’m ashamed I have been ashamed about…follow me?

My Mom is also in prison, currently in work release right across the street from me, I say that because just like you, I’m going through more than what you know me by, and it doesn’t just go away or get easier until you face it, we’ve all been embarrassed about our parents but um I got you beat!

I’m hopeful for the day I get out, wanting to live a life full, doing the little things I took advantage of, but I fear this weight of my past may carry more struggles that’ll keep me from moving forward, I’m my own worst critic, like most people

I was once a promising athlete and academic but I was also alien to myself, and when unknown pressures hit me, who I thought I was broke down real quick and I became a nightmare of a man that may have caused permanent scars in people that originated from scars I carried and ignored for so many years

My biggest motivation are my two sons, so when I’m out and given the chance to be a present father, my sons will not only know how their father fell but how he built a foundation while at the bottom through it all. I can’t wait to just hold my sons without a time limit and tell them I love them without saying goodbye right after…

In prison everything is a process just as life, people come and go in waves, just like life, but when they go, there’s a deeper unsettling loneliness left behind in their wake that we try to avoid dealing with

prison really shows us the extent of love by those we loved and believed love us, so how do you cope when every situation is coping?

Imagination, we dream hope believe becoming kid-like creating fantasy worlds that we plan to turn into reality, anything else is negative and there’s a list, facts

everything becomes an idea that is better than the last one and the reality we live now. We find peace in routines, music, working out, working, reading, drawing, writing, TV shows, flintstone communicating-no phones, emailing and calling out.

Escape is seeked because only a daunting

reality is offered, who likes facing rejection pain and vulnerable emotions? Not testosterone camp! but its more than that, some of us dive into classes and programs hoping we’ll find someone that sees more in us that we see in our self or something that can empower us women become the biggest sources of company, relationships become feigned for more than normally, all to escape the truth that we are lonely!

this is my life, but how much different are we from you? Prison isn’t only physical confinement, I was imprisoned way before I was in prison, and it took a sentence for me to read into that truth

what’s your prison and escape? truth you hide, or guilt/shame you carry?

I don’t mean to compare you as if you are just as bad, but to say we are just as much people as you

I hope you’ll begin to see that because a number carries a life and a life affects more than just that one person, just as yours does more than just yourself

I hope that maybe when we start getting seen as people instead of institutional livestock, then

real change can happen, one woke and compassionate person at a time

Truth.IN.Dare

November 28, 2019 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

truth or dare?

what it feels like

when your heart is the subject

and facing a person that you want by your side watching the sunset

what it feels like?

is truth or dare

when your gut gets so upset

since you see with your mind, your heart is an issue, you havent found the one yet

love is no game

but love is a choice

truth or dare suddenly sounds like your voice

and you were so sure

that you could pick both

but you were obscured

by what we want the most

see,

no one likes feeling alone

because,

who do we talk with, ourselves or our ghosts?

you know,

dating a lot is just trying to cope

likened to trying to keep warm, now you’re trying on coats y

ou ask how you look because you are dying to know

you look like forever, don’t try on now more

but what if it gets worn..?

what if it gets torn..?

what if the wind breaks thru..?

what if you start to get cold..?

then, what if you get a cold..?

sick of each other defiance-

holding up your chin,

sniff your runny nose, suddenly sick of your coat

that coat is your lover,

no!

you don’t make it to sunday

before you two split

because you both go bananas

then you hit the road

this isn’t how you planned it

doubt settles in, is that one in a million here on this planet?!

now you become manic!

here comes the panic!

because this one felt different

the view was romantic

but you hit rock bottom,

a sunken titanic

pulled down by the weight of your heart because it is so gigantic

the bigger the surface, the deeper the wound so the more room for cancer

love,

truth and dare?
