Foster Child

March 6, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

If all you do is punish me
how can you ever see
as anything other
than a child

I never asked to live here
you sent for me
making every condition I lived in untenable
so I had no choice but to abide

you waited for me with open arms
until all other eyes turned away
and the first chance you got
I was reminded that this wasn’t my home

although you clothed and fed me
with just enough to differentiate from pet
never forgetting to remind me of the nuisance my being was
and you being the sole compassionate parent willing to take me in

you didn’t care that I stuck out like a sore thumb
as long as that check came
and I was held to standards unreasonable per my circumstance
being reminded that anything less than perfect made me less than person

but I was worth the stress, as long as that check came
and with every talent I had, and skill I crafted
you stole and claimed for yourself, enriching your life off my back
and still, you got your check and held me in check

as I write this, reminded of my life as a foster child
and also the history of my people in America
I kind of lost track of which I was referring to
both sound so eerily similar…

how can my upbringing
mirror my ancestors’ enslavement
but times have changed,
so be happy?

but all I’ve inherited is a modern struggle
that mirrors the pain of faces names and religions that mean nothing to me
because I can’t place them
although without them, there is no me

split from their parents
split from mine
taken from their kids
taken from mine

and the cycle repeats…
how can I be pressured with the responsibility of breaking it!?!

what kind of family is this
yet you wonder why my home is broken
I either came from a broken home
or America, you broke!

Omens

March 4, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

wolf
howling in the distance
conceding an omen
a pile of bones
left in my closet
I’m sending to storage
pandemics,
paradoxes,
and paranormal portraits
swinging
on my leaning walls
coming in and out of focus
secrets
being whispered within the wind
’til I feel the breeze
life forces
life pushes
me down to my knees
only for me to understand
something deeper
than the height at which I stand

Feel Like Dying

February 26, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

I need to hurt right now
so that I can tell you how I feel
you asked the question,
“how do you feel?”
therefore, I need to search
discover
embrace
and then discern
so I can give you a real answer
…
I don’t feel like life
I feel I’m dying, I feel like dying, I think I died
I’m dead

Remember My Place

February 26, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

remember my place
where I’ve been placed
its lack of, yet ever opening space
a space with barely any space
a space that is a place
an ever open place spaced for mistakes
mistakes that take place in this space
place mistakes in space with haste
and if the statements you make in this place
go beyond your limit of space
you will be confined to an even smaller place of space
until you’ve learned your place
but how much space can a place take,
if you take place in a closed space?
don’t speak, don’t do better, don’t be better Way
because those that run the place that govern your space
will always save face
but this is where courage takes place
and spirit takes space
so yea…department of corrections, I’ve been put in my place
you put me back in place
in my place
with black sheep,
for me to save more from the space that you take
from those you cant face, yet save face by the gates you create
which form a place that takes up space
and I get angry and shake
but my faith won’t break
until I shake this place
and take my place
socially distanced beyond your gates
so I can create a space
for black sheep that have learned and found their place
with whatever space they make
because the meek shall inherit the…
and We CAN’T SHAKE that FATE!
AHH!

Fight to Survive

February 25, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

when you hide to survive
when have you ever been alive
when you lie to survive
who are you, while you stand?
have you ever stood?
are you understood?
and if you understand,
can you ever stand under?
or
do you have to fight to survive
incite and connive?
ignite and divide?
stride, strive, and strike to contrive
a spiritual fight,
amidst physical strife,
but this is a typical night
when you have to fight to survive
and then numbness in wake of battle,
seems to never subside
because when you fight to survive
you barely get to feel…
alive

Miserable Company

February 24, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

we came together
us three,
and made one
one body of,
shock
shame
and shackles-
an all too familiar ringing that dialed up our PTSD
while we answer it’s call with emasculated concession
and dignified contempt-
at the table in silence
jovial…
just hours before
when all seemed,
if not all together, gained
then, to be
but now
we sink simultaneously
scarred
scared
somber
and solemn…
a sacred vulnerability of pain shared for the weight of its implication
not just upon us
but also upon our loved ones
and to the world…who cares?
and to our families…who else would care?
and to us…why should we care any longer?
because this is too heavy to feel alone
even saved almost,
by the company of symbiotic or Siamese misery
sitting in silence
breaking it’s cloud over our fears and pains
with awkward jokes to lighten our disposition
all the while,
never mentioning the full extent of what’s being felt
because big boys don’t cry
alone,
nor
together
…
