Drowning

January 27, 2020 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

I can’t swim

maybe you’ve mastered doggy paddling for a moment

but with a speed-like panic and less calm across the surface of water

like me

but you never knew how exactly to swim with any finesse, skill or certainty

especially when it came to deepness

but then there’s a sudden panic that engulfs you at moments notice

without time to decide

the moment you see someone you love sinking

it overwhelms any sense of self

including self preservation

you don’t ponder what you can’t do

urgently you quickly think what you can do

and how

taking action without the self serving step we take of ensuring success

that would take too much time there’s no time to waste

any mental lapse is a time lapse

deciding life or death

seems there’s never enough time in life..

when meaning creeps into its fragile ever changing picture

you’ve always been a quick learner whenever reason was applied

with a great photographic memory

when it came to the simplicity of concepts

so within a second, you believe you can master in an instance

what has evaded your abilities throughout your lifetime

maybe it evaded you because of fear-

that crude calculation of self preservation

its roots in humiliation from failing what seems so natural and easy for most

although you struggle,

believing yourself too old for new tricks

making the decision to steer clear of all hardships the rest of your life

if you can help to at least

what’s the point of adding more struggle to this painful experience we call life

or maybe it’s the panic from the finality of failure and what that means

I mean, at some level, we all fear death

self preservation being a synonym for fear

but we trick our minds in the acts of courage bravery and love

after all, life is more mental than anything

once we can transcend the walls of our minds

than anything is possible…right?

and so you leap! –

a metaphor for faith diving thru the surface-

another metaphor,

for breaking through the shallowness to which you’ve existed

with will being your champion

and you reach and reach

but somehow

they seem as if they are falling faster than the dynamics of water would allow

faster than the horrible mechanics you’ve vaguely learned and held onto

ignorantly thinking you’d never need them

but you believe they are worth saving

so you can’t give up

too many have given up on you, you know the feeling

besides, they, wouldn’t give up on you right?

and still, you wouldn’t have done this anyway if you didn’t think there was a chance at success…would you?

maybe at some level, life becomes unbearable for most of us a

nd we entertain the thought,

the idea of death

but too cowardly to actually venture further than that selfish act of betrayal

always looking for a way out-

an easier path

but now here’s your excuse

a way for your life to finally mean something

Hero

or

Martyr, it seems

your options have never been so clear and honorable

you most definitely will be remembered in high regards

after all our humanity aches to be remembered

and so, in a sense, we will never die

that’s why history is so important

you can’t know where you’re going

if you don’t know where you’ve been

and who did it and how, first

the image of a frog comes to mind

and you do this wide bodied flail in the water

somehow picking up speed, and closing the distance

bridging the gap,

the gap that’s alluded you so much in life, love, and success

tormented by the days of past

that you just couldn’t seem to get passed

maybe you never will

but finding meaning has always held the gift of present

an escape from yesterday

as you near closer,

you see their eyes closed

noticing for the first time, that they just fell

without any fear resistance or panicked movement

almost resigned to their fate

or maybe …

no…

but

maybe it was planned

after all, you just saw the end of the fall

and made a split second judgement

just like life

decisions made without a full body of facts

framed by moments

though we chase history

we evade roots, cause, or reason…

and react to the symptoms

we just see the tail end of the fall

and dive in with our conclusions

you get close enough to grab them

you become mortally aware of one fact

you’ve never quite known how to hold your breath

I mean you got the concept

but being a surface dweller,

living your whole life without any depth

any discovery

afraid to dive in and explore the unknown

and the feeling of being in limbo with the very thing fueling life into your body every second

but you decided to live by avoidance

taking on the easy things that never made need of any risk

or a sacrifice plausible

you just never trained yourself how to die slow

because that’s what holding your breath is

and then the thought of the many levels and depths of dying slow

depending how deep you go…

I mean what’s the point in tempting fate?

safety was always the key to a meaningful life right

hurt does nothing but hurt better

to stay within your element

there’s trained scuba masters and the like whom decide to live on that edge

but this isn’t your expertise

and as you begin to suffer for air,

deep enough where the light of the surface is dimming

you grab them

with barely nothing left in you

facing them towards yourself

ready to rocket towards the surface

saving you both

then you notice something so chilling

that it stills you

and your fight for life alludes you

as you become face to face with them

because that person that was drowning

was you…

upon reflection…

this is how it feels when you give so much of yourself

that there’s no more air nor energy left for your swim back

resigned to your fate-

you close your eyes

and finally die outside like you had done your whole life so many times inside

I guess a hero or martyr

is part suicidal.

My Two Sons

January 26, 2020 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

My two sons are so beautiful but my past is so ugly tho my future is starting to resemble every bit of beauty that my kids are

figuring out how to piece together being a distant imprisoned father is like a jigsaw

so in my own heart I connect with them by staying up on all the latest Pixar

animal past, animated man, animation blaring on my TV screen, first thing seen, coming in from the big yard

Moana on freeform tonight, I’ll catch my other shows later

because I need to know the names of some of these movies in case I’m ever asked which one is my favorite

Buy a few songs from the movie, memorize them so I can sing along

I been through real prison moments, but these ones specifically are what make me feel strong mentality of being a father first and an inmate last

helps propel me beyond my past

shaping me for the day I walk beyond this grass

hugging my kids for what seems like seconds comparatively to the minutes engaged after the longest years apart, thinking why now does time suddenly fly so fast

then my mind goes back

to those moments without and wanting this one to last

yet worried if it’ll ever return like so many dependable ghosts from my past tears arrive on the crest but I have to subside and hide those back

telling my sons “I love you” and hearing them like “dad, I know that”

but deep down inside knowing they really don’t yet, full of blissful child-like innocence just enjoying the company of a man they naturally love that their mother’s once considered a psychopath

be present Russ, don’t fade like the past you

emote, project love, don’t let them feel that doubt cycling inside you

embrace showing them where they get it from, that missing link and how much you are just like them priceless the moment when they realize the me that’s deep inside them

I may have not been there to teach them to ride bikes but I’ll be there to ride right beside them striving to maintain love and excitement just like them

real parents learn from their kids while teaching them away from the wrongs we’ve already paved

I been there and done that sons, so you don’t have to guess now, you know what this looks like, please don’t go that way

one day I may watch my sons dance on stage, score touchdowns or pitch no hitters

but wherever they are that I can see, I’ll make sure to also be there when they are feeling the loneliest

my future passions mirror my dreams now,

and they no longer feel like pieces of a jigsaw because put together they paint such a beauty resembling every bit of perfection that my kids are

I can’t wait to live life and love wit yaw

run rave and reel a few Pixar’s

or movies for big boys and take a few pictures

wrestling around disguised as dads big hugs

but I won’t pretend whenever I kiss yaw

sippin milkshakes thru big straws

I missed the rocket games like 5 4 3 2 1 lift off!

daydreaming of future days with u two I tend to drift off

ever since i met then left u I been having withdrawals

parenting comes with flaws

but I see none within yaw

I pray u won’t be bitter but better

because I know where you’re headed

sons, real love isn’t measurable

so never let anyone’s conditional or lack of love measure u

I love you Josiah and Treyvan.

Prison Door

January 26, 2020 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

you!

I know your truth

I live inside your labyrinth of secrets

clever the walls you’ve set up to hide

yea you withhold just as much guilt from innocence as I

projecting your cloak of iniquities upon the labelled and lesser

self righteous in your makeup

you pretend to be this line of salvation and wreckage

this boundary between good and evil

a line of scrimmage for justice and criminals

protecting those that have been wronged

by the wrong

as if they too were never wronged

though you are built on this standard of correction

but more like a base line of opposition

the wars going on outside of you

are just as bad as the ones going on inside of you

but the world inside of you

is but a microcosm of the world outside of you

pretending to be this barrier between the civilized

and the savages

protecting the priveleged

from the indigent

facading as a moral platitude of righteousness

keeping the harmed safe from harmony

though the idea of you erects itself high above reproach

your moral compass has long since been broken

mirroring the fragmented sounds that occupy you

your par agonize lines of justice are made up

fabricated by a false sense of security

and it’s discriminating qualifiers of-

the right

and the wronged

life inside you has lost its humanity purpose and worth

though you find worth

monetarily at least

or you’d too, have no purpose

because you’ve showed as much that

humanity is but a blurred line

a clear line that you draw.

Suspense

January 26, 2020 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

For what she knew of me

not lie, nor truth

but wonder

because I knew not of myself

but I hungered

and she yearned with equal fire

to be my satiation

so we set sail

for a life full of discovery.

Loveland

January 26, 2020 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

As I promised escape

she accepted my offer

breaking her former chains

she breathlessly ran

and ran

and ran

possessed by the wind at her face

the calling of freedom

racing the plains of her heart

there was no slowing her-

until she collided with her destiny

the impact both moved and captured her

this was how she dreamed to be halted

standing tranquil motionless but unimpeded

ears fixed to his chest,

just listening

and listening

serenity and serendipity

finally free in his arms.

Detached

January 25, 2020 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

Losing touch

everything happening so fast

but at a distance

communication without connection

thinking has become mechanic

taking the humanity out of interactions

everything isn’t made to be fixed

some things function better broken

why seek the broken to fix them

I rather blend in

and in that,

we all heal

because pain

is more than a subject concept or algorithm

its an experience

and some experiences

don’t beg for answers

nor opinions and expertise

just a like spirit that gets it

communing through-

understanding, time

communication,

empathy,

and connection

rather understanding, then navigation

instead of a diagnosis I

don’t want to be fixed

nothing is wrong with me

what’s wrong

is that you may think there is

and that’s what needs fixing.
