You know why I am so uncomfortable?
Because I choose to care. You know
why I choose to care? Because
there is more than just me. Because
life is bigger than me. You know
why you don’t care enough? Because
it is in your immediate self-interest.
Because you have been trained not
taught, indoctrinated, not educated.
Because you believe ignorance is
bliss. Because it would chip away
at your privilege. Because there is
no financial incentive. Because you
detest discomfort. Because you
prefer illusions to reality. Because
you believe you are in control.
Because you believe control is
real. Because you believe power
is awarded to the worthy. Because
you believe the structure provides
all, as long as it is upheld, and
held up. So you play your part
and uphold the integrity of it.
A thing, has no integrity, nor virtues
morals and beliefs. A thing, has no
conception of dignity. So you
project your self-righteous beliefs
upon an idea that masquerades
as a structure. A foundation
to our society’s systems. This
system becomes flawless. When
fault is found, people substitute for
blame. The people who created
the systems are flawed, not the
systems themselves you say. Broad
strokes should only be applied to
people, not the flawless systems.
Unless the broad stroke is of success.
Your illusions of control power and comfort
are as temporary as the buildings that
apparently must burn in order for you to
finally admit, once seen with your own eyes
that there is a problem. But at that moment
the only problem admitted is the one you
identify with. The wrong problem, yet
the right one for you. It is the effect of
a cause, but it is not ‘your’ cause, so
you will confess to a problem that
made you feel uncomfortable. Because
it destroyed your delusionary belief
of control and power. Rendering you
vulnerable. Making you feel unsafe.
Because you feel uncomfortable.
Because you choose to care. But
what you care about is your self’s
interest. So yes it is a discomfort
from a ‘self’ care, not a human care.
It is a care of vanity. Not the care I
speak of, nor is it worthy of a complaint
of discomfort. Therefore our discomforts
are spawn of two worlds, though can be
explained the same. You choose to care…
about your life. This is your right. And I,
to your surprise, choose to care about my life
as well. And the way that your life affects
mine, and many others. Because the way
that your life is appraised above others.
Because the system makes you
comfortable, giving you the illusion
of control. A system you give the
authority of God. As to say, it is
omnipresent, omniscient, and
omnipotent. While it also mirrors
the virtues of your savior, in that it
is apparently blameless righteous
just and equal. And this makes me
feel unsafe and uncomfortable. Because
it makes you feel safe and comfortable.
This is why you say that you care, that
I could careless, and won’t do myself
the disservice and indignity of
believing you. And I am perfectly fine
making you uncomfortable. Because
I choose to care about my life, and
the selfless care in the humanity of all
oppressed peoples in the urban community
and all over the world. Malcolm X said,
it is not a Black problem. Nor is it a Minority
problem. It is a Human problem. It is a World
problem, not an American problem. Though
America perpetuates this most. And one
group of people can’t act as the power
oppressor and superiors on one hand. On the
other hand, voice grievance and be seen as
benevolent saviors most capable to fix
the problem while reaping advantageously
off the status comforts. The fact that your
discomfort stems from my desire to no
longer be uncomfortable is the very problem.
And until you stop trying to overly scrutinize
how demoralized people should fight, then
your comfort and opinion, are of the same
care me, as your care of me, compared to
your care of property and other acquired
possessions inherited attained and
maintained by your privilege. Therefore,
until we can echo, the desire feigned in the
battered traumatized and humiliated
words spoken by Rodney King, -a man
beaten by your structure’s illusion
of power and control- “Can we all just
get along?” Then while embodying the
pride, gusto, and excitement of a boxing
ring announcer’s words trumpeted from
belly deep. Introducing and illustrating a
carnal desire to see two worlds collide in a
display of will and might, to name a
last standing champion of the people
at bout’s end. Whom shall go on to be
paraded and believed in by all who
gathered to be won over. Just as the
ring announcer screams, “Let’s Get Ready
To Ruuuuuummmmbbbbbbllllleeeeee!”
I echo his sentiments and say, “Let’s Get
Ready To Stay Uncomfoooorrtttabbbblleee!”
At least until you are more ready to begin
caring about more than yourselves, while
woofing hallow words of support from your
clean and comfortable distances. Because
as people, it takes effort to survive. But as
people, should not take effort to be humane.
It should not take effort to care. That is an
issue of humanity, of care. Care should
be just as comfortable as your inauthentic
care has been. So wherever there is
depravity of care, there is a depravity
of humanity. Therefore we are all depraved
I Know You Are, but What Am I?
everybody is crazy
but I am insane
everybody is chaos
but I am bedlam
everybody gets angry
but I’m unhinged
everybody is redeemable
but I’m a felon
everybody is something
but I am something else
and since you’re so self righteous
I look like I’m the only one in need of help
As a Matter of Black
I don’t expect you to save me
hell
I don’t even expect for you to help me
honestly I expect you to be more in my way
than staying out of it
or even creating a share of a way
but I prefer you to move out of my way
while I am creating my own
and if you choose not to
then do not bemoan and protest my going through you
if I can not get around you
all things do not involve
nor revolve around you
if I need your help, offer it
because I’m done asking
when the problem is plain as day
and if you join me, learn to follow
before you remark on how it is led
your face is what has kept me back
it doesn’t need to be in front in order to get me ahead
just in the masses is good enough
there’s enough conditions placed upon changing my mine
strange the time some choose to speak
is not until I choose to act
weren’t you just quiet anyway?
shhhhh
thank you
you had your time and outlets
it’s mine now
The Ridiculousness of Us All
could you imagine
if you took being duplicitous or ambiguous
to the extreme of imagination
it’d be like
not only being of two minds
but literally having two minds
and those minds still control what and how you see and perceive things
here’s the catch
you’d still only have two eyes
and each eye corresponds with the mind it stems from
how would you know view the world
discern anything
or ever make a choice
now let’s go one extra extreme mile
what if each eye and its coordinating mind
corresponding with certain and opposing cultures, colors, genders, or or
ohhh ohhh, or opposing historical figures
or warring ideals and principles?
could you imagine one eye seeing like Trump and the other like Obama?
Or maybe a Far-Right Republican and a Far-Left Democrat?
maybe both on opposing sides of abortion laws
integration and segregation?!
maybe something as trivial as directions
what of Christian and Muslims
religion and science
black and white life?
how confused and cross-eyed would you be?
you’d be in a constant state of war of some ideal, method, belief, perception
just how it is right now
only all encompassed and embodied into one human body
and everyone outside of them would observe that person as upside down, backwards, crazy, hypocritical, and lost
is this how people look at our country?
when you think about it, division is so sophomoric, moronic, and ridiculous
because in every way, we are all interdependent
said simply, we need each other
and without others, who would what we think we are be?
no one wants to be the same,
yet we war to be different in order to make everyone believe and feel the same
conquering each others ability to differentiate ourselves
while qualifying worth to those differences
instead of personal pride with allowance of other’s differentiating degrees of self
we are the one image and many expressions of God
ridiculously expressing ourselves as separate
those separate expressions separating us because of our image
an image we create as opposites
upholding it above all others
imagine God fighting God’s self-ridiculous
humanity evolves over its differences
not similarities
we grow apart
not together
what a thing we do with the life we’ve been given
we work harder against each other
not smarter with each other
the ridiculousness of it all
we are just ridiculous
If ‘If’ was a Spliff
if you were healthy
we wouldn’t be speaking of unhealthy choices that you make, which should be changed
if you were beautiful
we wouldn’t be speaking of how to improve upon your ugliness
if you were smart
we wouldn’t consort over methods to increase your consumption and processing of knowledge
if you were tall
we wouldn’t query of what it would be like to not be short and how different the view would be and the feel of air
if we did speak on these matters
it wouldn’t be because you suffered from their inexistence
it would be matters of vanity and the self-esteem and obsessions which blossom from that vane tree
so again
if I were equal
we wouldn’t quibble over matters of my inequality and programs geared to bring about better equality and inclusion
if America wasn’t racist
we wouldn’t debate over ways to solve the racial and problems of inequities and injustice
if we were all seen as human beings
than color would not have been invented nor a context of description and qualification
so if I was an American
then how many Americas are there? because our experiences just seem so different and far apart, yet you only speak from the America of your own view and experience and seem perfectly content with the fact that your experience isn’t the same as mine
boy, privilege sure looks good
not only do you get to feel and see things better
but you get to decide how I should see feel and experience them as well, and also create the titles which it falls under
if I had a mind like yours, in a body like mine, it’d be called insane
if not coping, compliant, complicit, conforming, and cognitively dissonant, distant, different, distraught, and destroyed
I’m not a human being
I’m not an American
I’m not equal
and justice is not my reality
I’m inherently sober
I can’t buy expensive hallucinogens
I just don’t have the privilege required to believe in things that don’t exist
I don’t have the privilege of obliviousness
I don’t have the privilege to believe in ghosts and other things that are not there
that are not real
nor see them as different than as they appear
humanity is as illusory as objects in my rearview mirror
I can see other ways, but to see it another way
that effect would be of a drug, a drug of choice
and you’ve been high on privilege
hallucinating from the gateway of denial
and I guess I’m just unhappily sober
a bummer and Debbie downer I suppose
no wonder I don’t believe in American Dreams
I’m not high enough, I can’t see them
so pass that shit
I wanna get busy doing nothing
and feeling good ignoring other people’s suffering too!
damn it must be nice up there?!
one can only hope
and cope
or get a rope,
mope
or get some dope
I need a break from reality anyway
A Trip I Plan to Take
what a joy it is to contemplate God
when I can look up at the stars
and can know myself
both inside and out
an anatomy painted in the very universe
that looks down upon me
like a mother to her new born child
admiration in the reflection of creation
marveling at me being itself incarnated into body
anxious for me to learn and know it
like I am known
anxious for me to see myself in it
like a boy to his father
anxious for my love and admiration
like it bestows upon me
ever forgiving and ever lovingly-
a parent to their child
longing for the day that we are again, one
oh universe,
the mother’s eye of creation
the binoculars of life
I am how you envision yourself in the mirror of being
the body you’d imagine yourself having
the very fingers you’d glide across your own surface
becoming familiar with the fragile and majestic nature of form
and feel
you are the mirror-mirror on the wall
to which I look to and call
without vanity,
because you are the standard
to which you’ve inherited no flaws
nor any preference perceived or imagined beyond your glory
no one has ever uttered, “if only you looked like this”
how amazing a thing, to be above judgement
desired exploration being the answer to your mystery
like love
I feel the gravity of you protecting me
I feel you seeing me
for I can’t hide from you
your mysteries are known within me
and for me to know you, to explore you
the only travel plans I must make
are the one’s of self
