I am the sun

June 10, 2020 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

I am the sun,
I rise
and I fall
I am the sun,
the moment my eyes open
your day begins
and because of me,
your path is seen
and then able to be walked
I’ve blessed you with a shadow
after escaping the darkness you once dwelled
I am the sun,
and when I squint
your day is just about up
because when I close my eyes
you now see the moon

redemption

June 10, 2020 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

To Reach for Redemption
we must first Recognize your Reality
Release Resistance
Respond with Resilience
Realize your Reapings
Revel in your Revelations
and Rumble Young Rebel, Rumble!
because Redemption, is an act of defiance

I have been the travesty of my circumstance
the manifestation of my history
the instance of my mistakes
the appearance of my culture
the stereotype of my color
the record of my crime
the behavior of my conditioning
the product of my environment
but now I am the master and manifestor of my thoughts
with my words and deeds creating permanence to my reality
because I now control tomorrow
by mastering this moment,
the moments I take everyday
to direct my thoughts
and arrive where I desire most

my experience is different than yours
yea were all the same,
but my skin has to be a lot thicker
and I’m noticed right away
my experience is different from yours
they believe me aggressive in nature
I’m more exhausted from over monitoring my every action
one false move can prove fatal at any time
so ‘lost in the moment’ takes on new meaning
my experience is different from yours
and I may have to over apologize for myself
I understand my color and culture can get to be too much for you
and I don’t mean to impose, like you unapologetically do me
see my experience is just different from yours
if I cut myself I’m insane
but I’m just trying to peel back the thing that drives you crazy
and for some reason makes you hate me
unfortunately I’ll still act black
but if I could somehow change that
then maybe you’ll finally…
wait, what would that even make me?!
still too different from you!

darker presence

it’s quieter
throats clear
energy shifts
air dry and static
winds whisper
uncomfortable movements
muscles tense
breath held
it smells of fear
what?
all I did was walk by?

destined to fail

June 6, 2020 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

what does hope mean,
when choices are more limited than your options?
my friend sees another prison stint in his future
it’s not about going back out and rebuilding
its his crowd
he’s still young,
and so are they
whereas he says most of my crowd
are older and married off
or in prison already
the humble acknowledgement and morbid insight was like
hearing him say,
“I’m trapped and I can’t help it”
he rationalizes that he’s matured
but often, we are our environment
and many don’t have the means to escape it
no matter how aware we are
would you rather a person be lonely and uncomfortable
just because they were was once in prison
than find comfort in the only thing that they still may know,
after being taken from it
because the world still revolves
and isolation feels a lot like solitary confinement
imagine your life becoming like prison time in the hole,
just to keep from going back to prison
