Black Me, White Antagonism

March 29, 2022 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

why is black love
synonymous with white hate
why is black liberation
synonymous with white replacement
why is black power
synonymous with white fear
why is black anything
synonymous with white fear

All Things Come to Crossroads

how long will I take this indignity…
if the cost is too great
than what time will ever be best
if preservation is less sought
for truth justice and righteousness
than for self?

Reflective Rhyme Schemes

March 21, 2022 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

I used to see tragedies
as God’s way of getting back at me
maybe because I was an accident, black, or a bastard seed
and as I grew not mattering, combative, and stacking up casualties
but now I see a Masterpiece
two mystics and mystical misfits mythically matching matter with mastery
the mystery is magically-
woven in the crafted tapestry
and as it so happens,
Love is the fantastically fashioned fabric that fits us Naturally

before there was Now

the snow came unexpectedly
but we made do
and we noticed for the first time
we had a fireplace
to which we have
the snow to blame

Erect Your Spine

March 18, 2022 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

the flood came last
lo, foundation lost
the backbone bent
a temple’s collapsed pillars
shocks felt through the kingdom
the beginning of a civilization lost
and the air shallow
the quickening intakes quaked the constitution
confusion
the flood overtook land
animals ran about unchecked
equilibrium as extinct,
as the land before time
forces from below overwhelmed
taking over the empire
only instinct could save one
the throne usurped
doorways closed
hallways submerged
invertebrates siphoned vitality
ruins became legacy,
for generations
to a dismembered civilization
and as ages passed
time forgot
but seekers sought
waters receded
creepy crawlers swarmed the land
and over old pillars
an archaic memory made of legends
ran rampant by creatures of the ground
solar energy barely able to penetrate the infestation
and meet the ocean of mud
where lotuses waited for renewal
a life force hearing a call to awakening
a legacy, all but lost
now remembering its kingdom
though for now, unrecognizable
still any piece of peace found
can be salvaged
but first
one must restore the pillars
after which,
everything else will come forth
