Mortal Moral Lessons

June 20, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

this place
is NOT
big enough for us both
animal inclinations on autopilot
bearing my claws
hissing my disapproval
swiping at you for good measure
this is where I draw the line!
…
and then you move me out of your way
with your will,
coupled by your two hands
placing me down soft enough for my ego
to withstand the removal and new landing place
then walk beyond the line in the sand
unimpeded
and I ponder
what can I ever stand for
if I can be so easily, moved out of the way
I think my fight has become more of
instinct and principle
because by myself
I’m not strong enough to stop anything
and anyone
by myself
at least not in this state of being

Shelled

June 19, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

I’m simply
a mollusk
too soft for this world
so I’ve grown a hard shell
and I exist within it, always
to come out
would render me
prey, too vulnerable
to the predators of life
evolution is survival
therefore my ending might arise
if you request me to step out of which
I have lived by
sustained myself with
protected myself with
distanced myself with
disguised myself in
you may be asking me to risk
the very life
I’ve grown up
shielding you away from
parts of me you may never understand
those parts you may never accept
these parts, too fragile to be handled tightly
for I give in too easily
and so attraction has always proven to be
fatal, for people like me
so I move at a snails pace
to never stray too far, from my safe space

Unlivable Creations

June 18, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

if only
if only she’d allow it
if the universe would let, me
proceed,
in,
fourth
forward
beyond
let on
but her inclinations,
purely platonic
academic even
fore I am a study of my own-
undoing
I feel the earth’s tectonic plates
vibrate, and shift from under us
Pangaea, no more
for many lines count our differences
life making us more separate, than one
insurmountable odds erected as relative truths
as we navigated a planet’s gravitational pull
towards the ebbs and flows evenness
though harmony eradicated
chaos inflamed
and balance, radical
I’d all the same, succumb
traveling to my ending
engulfed by the gaseous flames of a star
a Phoenix, she once called me
does space have eyes?
can she see me in my ship
traveling through her?
will she ever tire of my trips?
she’s so vast, I wonder…
if she’s even fully conscious of her expanse
the limitlessness of her reach
all that she encompasses?
I mean, it’s so much to be aware of at once
and I, a lowly stargazer
obsessing over horoscope prophecies
signs, symbols, and depth, my love language
a sucker for the intrinsic nature-
of subtleties and extremes
the organic polarities and dualities of life
which sows me in their womb
the nucleus of where art’s creative powers
weave a cosmic design
and her pen draws my gaze
the sway of her cursive literally places stars
I believe she sees more than she lets on
how could she be blind,
when she writes with four l’s?
as if a pair of lenses,
adorn her visual senses
intricate, intelligence, intimacy, and intuition
so long I’ve romanticized her Galaxy
this vast universe of interconnectedness
exploring our interdependencies pre-written in stars
a soul grid of scatter plot dots
bedazzle a belt that trails space with no point of origin
oblivion and beyond, my affinity of her infinity
as one still seeks, can he ever experience serenity?
she’s settled within the canvass of cosmology
but I dare desire entrance
to her mythology of cosmogony
the jointed ends of her bones-
etched lines between stars
creating a zodiacal story narrated by her anatomy
I’m just a spaceman
fantasizing of creating less space
between us two
or of a space defined
for just us two
if words could draw a picture
she’d paint it
and we’d call it art
because art isn’t lived
it is only created, to be observed
at least that’s what I tell myself
and maybe this is why
the creation fire of attraction, still persists
at least that’s what I tell myself

Don’t Look Away

June 18, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

no more handicaps!
take this damn bandaid off me!
do not hide my process
I am a wound
I am wounded
I want you to see
what I look like
what I go through
to heal

what is covered
cannot fully heal
I need to stay
revealed,

to rectify
reconcile
restore
I need air

closing myself off
helped you more than I
you need to see this
so you know
that this,
is what a deep wound
looks like

do not avert your eyes
for you can not
acknowledge
what you can not see
see me!

I know I’m not pretty
but healing
never is
although scabs
mark my resilience
and there’s beauty in that
no more turning
your blind eyes
I don’t need your faith
I need your attention!

Mythical Origins

June 17, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

from myths-
to a mystic

to lips-
which uplift us

spoken visions-
that shift us

to balance scales-
we drifted

uniting us-
we remember

we’ll all return-
to sender

no matter race
or gender

no matter ways
we differ

no matter age
or vigor

the spirit is
elixir

Break Down

June 17, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

just give me a break!
I’ll break a leg
I’ve hit the brakes
I broke some rules
it broke me off
I’m broken too
I broke her too
she broke it off
that broke me down
I broke in two
I’ll break the bank
I’ll break new ground
I’ll break away
I’m broken down
a broken smile
I’ve broken in
at broken air
’til I break the walls
that broke my space
I’ve broke the pace
now just give me a break!
