know me

March 8, 2020 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

I seek to
decrease prejudice
and increase understanding
please stop judging
without knowing
because
I’m sentenced to a hurt-
lasting longer than that moment you judged me for

in denial

March 6, 2020 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

Prison is walking inside of the world,
barely making it back out with a story to tell;
knowing an inner truth so fatal,
yet somehow its exterior hides too well;
prison is like entering the thoughts of a person,
trying to understand why they act the way they do;
finally discovering a breakthrough in reason and behavior,
but your findings are denounced because of your record and lack of title, so nobody listens to you…

chivalry died cuz

March 5, 2020 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

Chivalry is dead
because men are too intimidated by a woman with a strong voice
because men don’t know what to do with a woman free in her choice
because outspoken men can’t navigate without dominance to subservience
because most men can’t cohabit complimenting themes, preferring one side of two extremes
because women deserve more
chivalry died
because it was made to keep women compliant satisfied and valued in second place
so wait baby, let me open your door

losing control

March 4, 2020 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

Protests and movements are so offensive
because most relationships happen between fences
and compromise is taken defensively
because gain always seems to the controller to come on too relentlessly
finding your voice is symbolic of a war fought within your trenches
and it upends all authority once it fully takes over and gains its independence
someone’s rights will always correspond an opposite’s offense
because control, rather abstract or concrete, can never lose it’s pretense

knee deep

March 3, 2020 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

Tears soften solid ground
turning dirt into soil
life blossoms from pain
earth, hear me hurt
as I fall
and break into you
knee deep
in a creek
where I weep
no peep
low peak
I don’t peek
hope bleak
slurred speech
I don’t preach
no reach
soul leaves
with cold breeze
cold breeze
torn jeans
and no sleeves
knee deep
in a creek
where I weep

royal reflections

March 2, 2020 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

Ever since I fell
I’ve been unafraid to fail
everywhere I go-
I overcome,
I rise,
I do more than well
like ripe, lush fruits-
my potential swells
I’m a king!
unrecognized by most too blind to tell
but most comparisons pale
because Royalty,
only recognizes reflections of itself
