Inside

Unrecognizable

March 17, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

they are dead
what they once were
they are no longer
so tell me
if a glow fades
if the sun shades
if a light dims into darkness
can it ever know,
and find light again
or will it forever be in the shadows-
clawing and nipping at the edges-
of what they once were,
who they once were
and how they once shined
never again seeing themselves in the light

Worth More Alive than Dead, but Death Costs Less

March 17, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

People,…
Peeeeople, I was once knew as warriors, are now dead…dead inside, and dead outside, they don’t look the same, bodies fattened, cheeks blotted, eyes glazed, or darkened and dull as if the vessel is empty of anything, giving visual to the decrepitude of their once strong lean and life/prisoned hardened stature

However the world may see these men, they were warriors, now they are zombies. The “Pill Line” as long and trafficked as San Francisco’s rush hour on the freeway, or they mumble around looking for the drugs, and when the drugs are barren, the void gets filled with aggression, because the escape is no longer possible, and the depth of their reality hits them

These were my friends, these were men I looked up to, these were boys I grew up with, all inside of this jungle, but the jungle has eaten them whole. And the world outside of here, is but a myth, am urban legend, once made real and manifest, but now as far away as the dreams spoken of from childhood

All that exists here is the constant ominous nightmare of reality, the ever-reaching fingers of demons, the latching shadows that hide as the sun snoozes, and the ghosts of regret of yesterdays too far away to believe as real

Or a figment of an imagined life so long ago that fairy tales persist as desperation that turned into criminality, per societies perception, then unforgiving plea deals, guilty verdicts, and sentencing structures that would hold John Starks from “demolition man” in cryostasis

But the only thing frozen is their hoping hearts, and nothing…NOTHING is preserved, because the light has flickered, and is all but gone

Where have I gone, where did I go, where have I been, because this isn’t where I left. This is what it looks like when love, freedom, and the world leaves you, but this is where my purpose left off, and this is where I continue on from

Because there is no place like home
but this is no place like home
because there is no place
and this is no home
this is a morbid apocalyptic limbo,
where fog clouds your footsteps
mist dampens your mood
accompanied by a nefarious gloomy glow
with hollow moans and howls in the distance
this is the lonely in between,
where the soul has left,
and the body hasn’t learned how to let go…yet
this isn’t a creative work
this is the reality here, and it hurts
society has clearly determined worth
and c.o.’s are just mortician assistants at work
oh, and to compound, and somehow make this sound worst
a man just spent 23yrs behind these walls
and right before he could get out
he had a heart attack,
dying that very night on the operator’s table
he was state property
Nebraskan State Property
Product of Structuralized and Systemic Injustice
an Item of the Industrial Prison Complex
a Victim of Mass Incarceration within a state that refuses to alleviate
audaciously proposing another prison built
so they won’t lose a penny to be collected
maximizing their money’s worth
and they stripped him bear
maybe deciding he wasn’t worth
the extra care of medical work
and so like a slave that died in the heat of the unforgiving sun
he collapsed in the field
giving all he had
right before his walk to his earned freedom
breathing his last breath
succumbing to a premature death
so you can imagine the heavy swallows
and hurting hearts
stroking the mood of this yard
and fear and pain resonating on faces and in voices
with only one of two ways to cope
to deal
to decompress
and that’s head to the freeway
or decide to walk that far lonely painful walk away
and deal with this reality man to man
knowing that loss and losing
is just as realistic-
as it being them breathing their last breath
because he wasn’t the first comrade fallen
and he won’t be the last
because we are worth more alive than dead
and so the sentence holds onto us for as long as it can
but when the cost of staying exceeds the projected worth
death, is much cheaper!
I can’t be my brother’s keeper
when there’s nothing and no one left to keep
and death seems to only be
housekeeping

Smokers Lane

March 12, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

I sleep here
so I can’t not notice
it surrounds me
and to be aware, is to be alive
but I try to do my time
and allow them to do theirs
so I don’t judge them
I try not to
but as I walk down this lane
I see masked pain
the lies of men trying to stay sane
the laughs of men cloaking their shame
and they nod off
a nod I’m familiar with
some of these men are as old as the heroine and crack epidemic
in and out of prison, but never fully escaping
but this is their escape
I can only imagine their pain and the things they’ve seen
some are as young as generation Z
having no solid footing and direction in life
just youthful living for the thrill
figuring they have years to sacrifice
the world doesn’t care about them
so why should they care
and so they join generations as old as their grandfathers and great grandfathers
passing time
numbing pain
disguising shame
and they nod off
as if in a hypnotic trans
they are somewhere, this I know
but they are not here
and in that, I guess they are successful
finally successful at something
but reality kicks in, because as they know all too well
nothing lasts forever
and that’s where the chase begins
I guess that’s the only thrill,
the chase
and it’s hard not to judge
because I still have to observe with caution
never knowing when they will snap out of it
and who they will become in the midst
because when they chase
their eyes and mind is just like mine-
tunnel-visioned
walking down this smokers lane

Bedrock

March 12, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

this damn bedrocks
and not like the cradle I never had
it shakes
squeaks
and creaks
with movement
an old rusted bunk, painted over
in need of oil, then replacement!
I move as subtly as I can
as to not rock my bottom bunky into a deeper sleep
or a sudden awakened state
it’s the 4th and last bay
no walls separate us
seems like a shelter or high end concentration camp
each bay consisting of two rows of 7 bunks
28 x 4 is the amount of souls that I accompany in sleep
28 x 4 different sleeping patterns, states, sounds, and smells
28 x 4 haunted souls that dream and are caught by nightmares that catch up and accumulate all at once
28 x 4 different men rocking twisting turning and shake their bunks
28 x 4 different reasons to feel paranoid and be as vulnerable as a human can ever be in life
all them minus one of course
because I’m awake
and as I climb down from the wretched platform that grants me sight of every bay
even sight of my own demise if I happen to fall during my sleep
I rise to my knees slowly, crawling towards the edge
trying to make as less noise as possible
while I am still berated by the mixture of snores and stirs
I straddle over the end rail
me and my short legs
then grip tightly for leverage
holding onto something I rather let go and be rid of
story of my life right
slow does it, cuz I have to be mindful of everyone’s slumber
especially my bunky
and as I near ground, each of the four bars descended at a time
I hear an outburst
someone having a full conversation in their sleep
another uproar of snoring
another toss and turn
another shake quake and rock
and then I touch the prison floor
safely reaching rock bottom

Aiming from the Ground (Lyrics)

March 10, 2021 by Russell Wardlow Leave a Comment

(chorus/hook):

I been 100
I keep it 100
I’m going a hunned
I move like 300
I know that you wonder
you wonder, you wonder
yuh
I do it
I did it
I done it, I done it
I’m running
I’m jumping
I’m flying
I’m stunting
I’m coming
you don’t know what’s coming
I came up from nothing
you know that I’m something
I’m something, I’m something!

(verse 1):

and I’m aiming for the Lear
and I’m changing like the gears
and I’m framing every year
so my path will stay clear-while I’m
reflecting in the mirror
sometimes the past may seem too near
sometimes it crashes at the rear, yuh
unh
so I have to stay up in this moment
and all that captures me right here
so I stay hands-on with my drive-I don’t veer I only steer
you only jeer but I say cheers
like drinking beer
I’m going cray-Brittney spears
won’t lose my way-Whitney fears

looking out my prison’s windows
was in prison pens and kennels
was in prison incidental
was imprisoned in my mental
get the memo-whoa
pain inside my ventricles
my spirit was my vehicle
that’s what gave me my neo glow

(bridge):

judged me hard, but forgive him he don’t know
I’ve been knee deep in my woes
tryna dig that glittered gold-cuz they say
you reap what you sow
now you know
all that blossoms blooms unfold
so far that story ain’t been untold
enjoy the show

(chorus/hook):

I been 100
I keep it 100
I’m going a hunned
I move like 300
I know that you wonder
you wonder, you wonder
yuh
I do it
I did it
I done it, I done it
I’m rushing
I’m lunging
I’m plunging
I’m hunting
I’m coming
you don’t know what’s coming
I came up from nothing
u know that I’m something
I’m something I’m something

(verse 2):

they don’t know where we came from
they don’t know how we came up
they don’t know how hard that was
swam in mud and draped in blood
empty fridges
on the fringes
in the trenches
crimes committed
don’t know who did
ain’t no witness
lengthy sentence
no forgiveness
no amends and no repentance
pride was bitten like the fruit that was forbidden
they don’t get it
I hear crickets
thank you critics

cuz this my lift off!
used to be pissed off!
used to be pissed on!
used to be kicked on!
now dirt kicked up!
got the rocks off, wit new kicks ons

(bridge):

judged me hard, but forgive him he don’t know
I’ve been knee deep in woes
tryna dig that glittered gold-cuz they say
you reap what you sow
now you know
all that blossoms blooms unfold
so far that story ain’t been untold
enjoy the show!
